The Master of Science (MS) in Risk, Resilience and Integrity Management at Glasgow Caledonian New York College (GCNYC) teaches students how to analyze risk as an opportunity for growth and change. This risk management program can be completed on a full or part-time basis with classes held in the evenings. In this research-based graduate program, you will gain holistic knowledge as well as practical skills to navigate the complexities of risk and integrity management. Our unique approach to enterprise risk examines aspects of crisis and data management, business continuity, and corporate social impact. All organizations need risk management professionals who can thrive on the challenges of globalization, new technologies and the increasing demands to be conscious of sustainability. 

Risk Management Program Structure at GCNYC

This degree is designed for individuals interested in risk and integrity management as an opportunity for strategic innovation and to contribute to the Common Good. Our holistic program provides excellent preparation for careers related to entrepreneurial risk. management, corporate social responsibility and internal (corporate) risk management. This graduate degree also prepares students for integrity management careers aligned with sustainability and Environmental Social Governance (ESG) strategy initiatives. 

The Risk, Resilience and Integrity Management degree at GCNYC can be completed on a part-time basis in 16 months with one to two classes weekly or on a full-time basis in 12 months with three weekly classes. All classes take place in the evenings either online or at our SoHo campus to cater to working professionals. Note: international students on a F-1 student visa must be full-time students.

Applied Research at GCNYC

At Glasgow Caledonian New York College, we are dedicated to excellence in applied research.  Our faculty participate in applied research as both academics and practitioners in their fields. Much of the coursework is built from case studies and industry research to help students connect challenges in risk management to their own research and careers. Our risk management degree culminates in a master’s-level thesis, a model common to business schools in the UK. 

GCNYC provides students with the resources to develop their own applied research process and contribute to the field of risk and integrity management research. Completing a master’s-level thesis demonstrates your ability to ask important questions about the field and explore the balance between profitability and sustainability—all skills that would be valuable to future employers or starting your own enterprise.

Program Learning Outcomes

The primary goal of this program is to provide a broad, analytical and integrative study of Risk. Specifically, the educational aims are:

  • To critically examine the implications for businesses of recent and future changes in the global business environment by applying a range of analytical tools and frameworks for assessment and development of a firm’s strategic capability, competences and competitive position in a variety of global settings.
  • To appraise the causes and consequences of shifting contours of global politics, economics, and social developments, and their implications for organizational leadership and responsible management.
  • To identify and evaluate organizational factors affecting leadership, including structure, culture and sources of power, devising a strategic leadership-development plan.
  • To demonstrate advanced conceptual and theoretical understanding of resilience and Business Continuity principles and their practical application, including business impact assessment and crisis management.
  • To design and implement enterprise level risk management and drive value from risk management for business operations and integration with strategy.
  • To demonstrate a systematic understanding of the nature of corporate ethics, compliance, governance, and accountability.
  • To critically evaluate literature and select and utilize appropriate qualitative and quantitative methodologies in the formulation of research.
  • To develop a proposal, conduct empirical research, present an intellectually robust and evidence-based analysis, and develop appropriate recommendations.

Business Strategy as an Instrument for Economic, Social and Environmental Sustainability

This course aims to provide students with academic knowledge and analytical tools with which to discuss and practice strategic management in a world characterized by rapid change and increasing concerns for economic, social and environmental sustainability. The course seeks to address the who, what, why, where and how of strategic decisions, with an emphasis on generating sustainable growth across national boundaries. Students will develop the knowledge and skills required to undertake the necessary research and analysis to advise a firm on the issues organizations face, and the choices they must make, to develop strategies for sustainable growth.

Navigating Global Change: Business Practices for the Common Good

This course reflects the fact that organizations do not operate in a vacuum: they are both shaped by and themselves also shape the geo-political, economic, social and technological environments in which they operate. Understanding the interaction between organizations and their wider contexts is essential to effective management and responsible leadership. This course is designed to equip students with the information and analytical skills required to critically reflect upon some of the most significant issues which pose challenges to business managers and organizational leaders in the modern world.

Values Based Leadership Skills for an Interconnected World

This course will enable students to identify, understand, develop and articulate their key personal abilities in the context of their future career aspirations. The development of their academic and professional skill set is essential to securing and/or developing fulfilling careers as expert managers and leaders in increasingly diverse and international workplace organizations.

Building 21st Century Resilience

The Role of Business Continuity, Crisis Management and Cyber-Risk Governance (Formally known as Business Continuity and Crisis Management) 4 None The course takes a strategic approach to the issue of Business Continuity Management (BCM). This course will examine the relationship between risk management and business continuity management, examining the key drivers for BCM including its historical development. The course will look in detail at each of the stages of implementing a BCM system in the context of relevant industry standards. Finally, the course will consider the strategies employed when an organization faces a crisis situation.

Enterprise and Strategic Risk Management

Cases, Tools and Techniques (Formally known as Enterprise Risk and Modelling) 4 None The course introduces students to key theoretical concepts, risk management processes and practices within spectrum of contexts within which risk is currently understood as well as providing an understanding of the core concepts and tools used to build modern risk analysis models. It uses hands-on approach and practical computing exercises to introduce the students to the mathematical and statistical foundations of risk analysis. These core mathematical, statistical and computing concepts are then combined to explore a number of modern risk analysis modelling techniques.

Global Ethics, Compliance and Governance

The Foundation of the High Integrity Organization (Formally known as (Ethics and Corporate Governance) 4 None This course explores the key issues in global ethics, compliance and corporate governance and the extent to which the current prevailing arrangements secure corporate accountability, responsibility and integrity within all types of organization whether for-profit, non-profit, educational or governmental. The course will provide students with a foundational understanding of the key concepts and elements that make for a solid and effective governance framework including structure, practices and treatment of key stakeholders including shareholders. The course will also incorporate a theoretical and practical understanding of ethics and compliance programs and the key elements that go into the creation of an “effective” corporate integrity program based on global standards developed over the past three decades, including analysis of codes of conduct, training and communications programs and the handling and treatment of whistleblowers. US, European and global influences will be addressed in the review of all such key ethics, compliance and governance practices.

Research Methods

This course aims to develop advanced skills related to a range of contemporary research methods needed for academic and practical research at a Master’s level. Students should be able to critically evaluate new concepts, ideas and evidence from a range of sources and crucially and transfer their skills into practice. Emphasis is placed on written and oral presentation skills at an advanced management level.

Thesis

The aim of this course is to conduct business research/consultancy and report on the findings. Drawing on the proposal developed in Research Methods, the course focuses on the business research project, which involves an investigation of a substantial business issue or problem. Students are required to demonstrate critical awareness of business practice, relevant theories and research techniques and approaches. The project element of the course in particular offers students the opportunity to apply course concept, theories and techniques, draw on internationally published literature and good practice, and develop and interpret knowledge about management practice in their area of study.
